Unfortunately, if you're interested, you need to get it now. The tax credit expires at the end of the year. Which means you only have one month to buy the new hybrid which will be available in the beginning of December.<br /><br />The Hyundai Hybrid received an EPA rating of 36/40 mpg city/highway. That put it below the Ford Fusion Hybrid, which got the full tax credit of $3,400. But then, Ford has already sold the 60,000 hybrid cars that put it over the limit, forcing the tax credits to phase out back in April. Toyota and Honda hybrids ran out of tax credits much sooner than that.<br /><br />The price has not been released yet on the Sonata Hybrid.

The federal tax credit was announced to be $900. Not much of an incentive, I guess.  But if you qualify, something is better than nothing.<br /><br />And I might add, <a href="http://www.hybridcars.com/law-incentives/tax-credit-100000-bmw-hybrid-bizarre-and-wrong-28047.html">it's not wrong</a>. The Beemer Hybrid may be expensive. The tax credit may be going to people who can afford the car and don't need it. And this hybrid was designed for power and speed, not fuel efficiency. <br /><br />But it is a hybrid, with a hybrid engine and a battery pack. That means more hybrid engines and more battery packs are being built. Which means the oh so important scale is kicking in, which means the prices on these components will come down.<br /><br />Which means, eventually, that there will be a hybrid for everyone. The Honda Insight, the so-called hybrid for everyone, is not really for everyone. Not when it costs a minimum of $20K to buy one. Nor are the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt, which will cost almost twice as much, going to be for everyone even with a $7,500 tax credit from the government. Not when the battery pack being installed into the Volt and Leaf costs $10,000.<br /><br />And so, the incentive may not be much, and perhaps the price tag means you won't be buying one any time soon. But every time I see another Tesla Roadster or BMW ActiveHybrid 7 has been sold, I celebrate a little bit. Each one bought accelerates when there really will be a hybrid, or electric car, for everyone.

But since it was clear that Toyota had a big lead on hybrid technology, a 60,000 limit was set for each manufacturer.<br /><br />There was no limit on the type of vehicle, so <a href="http://hybridreview.blogspot.com/2009/01/ford-fusion-hybrid-and-mercury-milan.html">the 2010 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan Hybrids were eligible for the tax credit</a> when they launched.<br /><br />The quarter after the company sold over 60,000 hybrid cars, the step down period would begin. After two quarters, the tax credit would be cut in half. After two more quarters, the credit was cut in half again. And then it would be gone.<br /><br />Ford, like <a href="http://hybridreview.blogspot.com/2007/11/federal-tax-credits-for-toyota-is.html">Toyota</a> and <a href="http://hybridreview.blogspot.com/2007/11/honda-hybrid-federal-tax-credit-begins.html">Honda</a> before them, has reached the end of the road. It can be argued that the <a href="http://hybridreview.blogspot.com/2009/03/do-hybrid-sales-fall-after-tax-credits.html">tax credit for hybrid cars is no longer needed</a>, but it certainly helped kick them off.  Just as it's going to <a href="http://hybridreview.blogspot.com/2010/03/nissan-leaf-price.html">help kick the electric vehicle (and E-REV) market into gear</a>.</div>

Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid Qualifies for $1,150 in Federal Tax Credits

Mercedes-Benz announced their 2010 S400 Hybrid has qualified for the hybrid car tax credit.  Anyone who buys a hybrid, and <a bitly="BITLY_PROCESSED" href="http://hybridreview.blogspot.com/2007/01/will-you-qualify-for-federal-tax-credit.html">otherwise qualifies for the tax credit</a>, can get up to $1,150.<br /><br />The Alternative Motor Vehicle Credit is available to those who buy hybrids or other alternative vehicles.  The amount of the credit offered varies depending on the fuel efficiency of the tax credit.  <a bitly="BITLY_PROCESSED" href="http://hybridreview.blogspot.com/2009/04/federal-tax-credit-on-2009-hybrid.html">The amount of tax credits available by vehicle on the 2009 model year cars</a> varies from $3,400 for the Ford Fusion Hybrid down to $1,550 for the Malibu Hybrid. <br /><br />That indicates the S400 Hybrid rates pretty low for fuel efficiency on the scale of other hybrids.    <br /><br />After the first 60,000 units are sold from Mercedes-Benz, the tax credit would be cut in half for the following two quarters.  After that, it would be cut in half again for the next two quarters.  After that, the tax credit is gone.  Anyone who buys a Honda and Toyota hybrid now cannot receive a tax credit, as the credits have already expired for those two companies.  Ford is down to 25% of the full credit.<br /><br />To find out <a bitly="BITLY_PROCESSED" href="http://hybridreview.blogspot.com/2008/01/hybrid-car-tax-credit-for-2007.html">how to get your federal tax credit on your hybrid car</a>, follow the link.<br /><br /><br />Press Release Follows:<br /><br />Mercedes-Benz USA announced today that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has designated the new 2010 S400 Hybrid as eligible for the Alternative Motor Vehicle Credit as a Qualified Hybrid Motor Vehicle. Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid customers are eligible for a one-time tax credit of up to $1,150.<br /><br />The S400 Hybrid is equipped with the world's first lithium-ion battery designed specifically for automotive use. A lightweight, high-capacity lithium-ion battery works in combination with a 20-horsepower electric motor and a 275-hp, 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine to deliver EPA mileage ratings of 19 MPG city and 26 MPG highway - an improvement of 26% when compared to the V8-powered S550 sedan. The 120-volt lithium-ion battery weighs less than most other batteries and can be installed in the engine compartment, requiring no reductions in trunk or cabin space.<br /><br /><br />The hybrid system includes a seamless start-stop function that turns off the gasoline engine below nine mph when braking to a stop. When the S400 HYBRID is at a traffic light, for example, the gasoline engine is off, but the AC compressor and steering pump are operated electrically, so air conditioning and power steering are fully operational. When the brakes are released, the gasoline engine is started automatically, and works with the electric motor for seamless performance.<br /><br />During braking, the electric motor acts as a generator, recovering kinetic energy and storing it in the lithium-ion battery. Under heavy braking, the vehicle's conventional brakes provide supplemental stopping power.
